Getting to know Boys Basketball Star Thomas Shaughnessy ’18 - Needham (VIDEO)
Thomas Shaughnessy ‘18 - Needham

Thomas Shaughnessy ‘18 is one of the most competitive players in the state of Massachusetts. From slapping the floor on defense to hitting clutch shots, the Brown University commitment does it all.

Shaughnessy made headlines on the AAU circuit with the Middlesex Magic and continued to excel for his hometown Needham Rockets for four years, averaging 21 points per game this season and scoring his 1,000th career point.

It is safe to say he will certainly be missed. Not by opposing teams, however, as he is arguably one of the best two-way players the state has produced in recent years

"Getting to Know You" Q-and-A segment.

Q: Where are you from?

A: Born in DC, raised in Needham

Q: Where are you going next year for college?

A: Brown University

Q: What high school do you go to?

A: Needham HS

Q: Thoughts on ever going to prep/private school?

A: Never was a real consideration for me. Prideful that it took me 4 years to complete HS and go D1 after. Nothing against kids who go prep. Kids do it for many reasons. But with hard work and the right decisions things became possible for me while staying in my hometown.

Q: Favorite NBA Team?

A: Celtics

Q: Fav NBA Player?

A: Westbrook

Q: AAU Team?

A: Middlesex Magic

Q: Sponsored team?

A: No, one of best parts of my experience was being on a non-sponsored team and taking down sponsored teams, with a bunch of kids no one really talked about.

Q: AAU Experience:

A: Special and perfect fit. Big fan of AAU if you find the right fit. Spent 2.5 years with the Magic.

Q: Favorite NFL Team?

A: Patriots

Q: Favorite Food?

A: Hamburger

Q: Favorite Movie?

A: Coach Carter

Q: Something people may not know about you?

A: I love Needham. I am attached to it. I love the people and everything about it.

Q: Advice to a kid on and off the court?

A: Not to worry about what others are saying about you. Play your game and just work hard because coaches will always find kids who want to win. Work on your weaknesses and make them your strengths. Don’t be the kid always complaining. Be coachable, play defense and hustle. With these characteristics, you’ll always be on the court.
