Aliza Simpson ‘14 - Guard - Londonderry (NH) - Girls Basketball
We go North of the border this week, to the Granite State, for our Athlete of the Week honor, as we recognize Londonderry's Aliza Simpson '14.
Simpson is the latest star this season to score her 1,000th career point.
The University of New Hampshire bound guard netted 27 points in an 80-34 win over Merrimack (NH) on Friday night.
"It's definitely a good feeling," Simpson told Mass Prep Stars, of the accomplishment. "Before high school even started this had been a goal of mine. To be able to finally achieve it is pretty awesome."
Simpson needed 26 points to get to the 1,000 mark and is now just 26 assists shy of 500 career assists.
"It just shows that the work I have been doing is finally paying off," Simpson said. "I am not going to settle though. Being able to celebrate this moment with my teammates is even more amazing. I have been playing with most of them since I was in third grade and it is just a great group of girls. I am so thankful for the people who made it possible, the coaches I have had, my friends and family and most of all my parents. They are so supportive and I definitely would not have been able to achieve this personal accomplishment without them."
The versatile Simpson is averaging over 22 points a game this season and is at or near the team lead of every major statistical category.
Simpson and the Lancers (5-0, 4-0 in NH) are off to a strong start this season as they look forward to the stretch run of the 2003-2014 season.
"The season has been good so far," Simpson said. "We just need to keep playing our game. Our team is very deep and talented. We have height, speed, and experience and it should be a promising year if we stay healthy."
