Boys Basketball: State Championship Weekend in NH, MA, CT & VT
Bishop Guertin, behind a roaring fourth quarter comeback, defeated Trinity, 54-46, to win the Division 1 State Championship. Senior forwards Connor Green and Sean McClung each dropped 22 points in the victory. Trinity's Wol Majong had 21 points and Mabor Gabriel had 15 for the runner's up. Green was also named the 2011 Gatorade Player of the year in the state of New Hampshire earlier in the week. The 6'4 forward will take his game to Phillips Exeter next year where he will do a PG year.
Top-seeded Milford capped off a perfect season (22-0) by defeating #4 ranked Portsmouth, 48-42, at the University of New Hampshire to win its second consecutive Division 2 state championship.Trinity College bound Mike O’Loughlin (pictured left) led Milford with 18 points and seven rebounds. Jamie Holder also added 14 points. Portsmouth junior point guard Kamahl Walker led the Clippers in scoring with 11 points.
Junior Kris Dunn (26 points) led New London to a, 63-55, victory over Northwest Catholic Saturday to take the Class L title. New London shut down sophomore star Kuran Iverson as he was held to five points on the day. Read more on the game here
St. Joseph-Trumbull routed Fairfield Prep, 79-53, in the Class LL final for legendary coach Vito Montelli's 10th state title.
The Cadets' gave the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference a 2-0 head-to-head edge over the South Connecticut Conference as Trinity Catholic-Stamford topped Career Magnet-New Haven, 57-51, in the Class M final.
St. John's Prep of Danvers defeated St. John's of Shrewsbury, . Junior Steve Haldyna starred on the night as he scored 29 points in the win. Notre Dame bound senior and 2011 Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year Pat Connaughton had 26 points in the St. John's Prep win. California bound football star Richard Rodgers had 26 points for St. John's Shrewsbury.
New Mission won their second straight MIAA State Championship as they defeated Northbridge, 67-57. After making the move up to D2 from D4 last year New Mission seniors Darius Davis, Samir McDaniels and Kachi Nzerem went out on top for Coach Cory McCarthy's Titans.
Whitinsville Christian defeated Watertown, 42-36, to win the D3 boys State Championship.Sophomore Colin Richie led the way for WC with 16 points and senior sharp shooter Marco Coppola had 15 for Watertown in the loss.
Rice High School had a fierce late quarter comeback to defeat Rutland, 55-48, to win the Vermont Division 1state title Saturday night.
Top-ranked Missisquoi defeated #3 Fair Haven, 47-40, in the Vermont Division 2 state championship. This is the first state championship in boys basketball in the history of the school.
In the Division 3 final top seeded Winooski defeated #4 Thetford, 49-43, to take home the state championship.
Twinfield finished perfect at 24-0 by defeating Danville in the Division 4 finals. Twinfield got an impressive performance from junior Chad Copeland, who scored 32 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.
