GIRLS BASKETBALL RECAP: Mwai and Schecter Lead Red Raiders to Win

Shyan Mwai '18 - Lowell

CONCORD, Mass. – The Lowell Lady Red Raiders led from start to finish on Monday afternoon, as they defeated the Concord-Carlisle Patriots, 54-30.

Lowell was led by the strong play of freshman point guard Shyan Mwai '18  (pictured left) and junior center Alexi Schecter '16.

The Lady Red Raiders started strong out of the gate, as they built a 15-4 lead after one quarter of play.  Their aggressive 1-3-1 half court defense gave the Patriots problems of and helped Lowell score in transition.

C-C's 2-3 also presented problems for Lowell in the second quarter, as the host Patriots hung close throughout the second frame and cut the Lowell lead to 22-12 at the half.,

The third quarter would belong to Mwai, as the heady freshman got her perimeter game going, scoring nine points in the quarter as Lowell rolled to the 54-30 win.

STANDOUTS

Shyan Mwai '18 - 5-foot-5 - Point Guard - Lowell - This was our second time seeing Mwai and the first time outside AAU play. The young point guard did not disappoint on Monday, as she controlled the pace and tempo of the game and found her way around the zone, playing the entire game, albeit three minutes late.

Mwai scored 21 points to go with six assists, four steals, and three rebounds, as she displayed quick hands, exceptional athleticism and young confidence. Mwai struggled form the field early but caught fire in the third quarter, nailing two big consecutive 3-pointers to put the game out of reach.

Mwai has all the makings of a future star and reminds us of a young Brianne Stepherson (Masconomet/Boston College). With continued work on her perimeter game the sky is the limit for the young point guard.

Alexi Schecter '16 - 6-foot-3 Center - Lowell - Schecter is a true center in the true definition of the position. She has been one of the top back-to-the-basket bigs in the MIAA since she began her high school career two years ago. On Monday she commanded double and triple teams and he presence really opened up the court for her teammates. One of the most impressive aspects of Schecter's game on Monday was her patience not to force offense. Schecter also did a great job of policing the paint defensively.

Schecter finished the game with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots. As Schecter continues to work on her face up game and quickness on the block she should continue to be able to take advantage of the constant double teams she faces each night.

Also playing well in the contest:

Lowell - Sheanna Rivera '15 - Guard.

Concord-Carlisle - Charlotte Myers '16 - Forward and Meredith Clarke '15 - Post.
