Duxbury Scores Six in the Fourth to Defeat Billerica
The buzz was in the air on a beautiful Spring evening as two of the best boys lacrosse programs in Massachusetts set to take the field at Marshall Middle School in Billerica.
Duxbury (3-1) and Billerica (2-2) both came out strong defensively as goalies Henry Buonagurio '12 and Billerica's D.J Smith '13 made big save early resulting in a 1-1 score after the first quarter.
Billerica and Duxbury went back and forth in the second quarter as the Indians would take a, 5-4, lead into the half. Billerica attackmen Nick Morello '11, Cam Slatton '12 and midfielder Peter Walters provided the offensive punch for Billerica while juniors Chris Williams, Sam Sweet and Will Seifert notched tallies for Duxbury.
The second half was a tale of two quarters as Billerica dominated the third grabbing a, 9-6, lead heading into the final quarter.
Duxbury's defense, led by Max Randall '12 (pictured below) did a fantastic job all night holding UMass bound All-American Grant Whiteway '11 at bay. The senior was held to only one goal and one assist in the contest.
As soon as the fourth quarter began it was all Duxbury as they dominated in every facet of the game. Senior Bryan Barry (pictured two photos below) was a face-off machine, winning nearly every one that he took and controlling the possessions for the Dragons. Duxbury scored six unanswered goals in the quarter and got two a piece from senior midfielder Kane Haffey '11 (pictured below) and Paul Hellar '12 on their way to the commanding, 12-9, come from behind victory.
"In the first half I think offensively we were a little impatient, we weren't moving enough, and we weren't spreading out the defense," said Haffey. "In the fourth quarter we just picked our spots to go to the cage better and had a lot more patience. We were confident we could make a run and take the game back, and we went out and did it."
Overall it was a good measuring stick for these two D1 powers. An early season battle like this can go a long way to building momentum for the upcoming meat of the season for both teams.
"I thought we had a good game overall, said Barry. "There is definitely plenty of room for improvement and we have a long way to go. Our defense played great tonight and I am glad to know we have a team this year that doesn't give up."
Billerica gets right back to action tonight with a home, Friday night lights game (7 p.m.) against rival Chelmsford. Duxbury continues their brutal schedule with New York power Garden City (NY) coming to Harvard Stadium for a Saturday afternoon match-up. The Dragons then face one of the hottest teams in the state in BC High on Monday.
