2013 Summer Player Evaluations:Boston Shootout
Matt Borrello for Mass Prep Stars
Four days have passed since the Boston Shootout, and while sifting my notes, I thought it would be great to take a step back and provide some of my impressions from this past weekend from some players that deserve some publicity. A lot has been written about Bruce Brown and Crew Ainge's performance, and rightfully so. Here are some additional players that left an impression on me over the course of the course of the tournament:
Celia Araujo, 5’10”JR. PG from South Boston (Gennesis Academy, VA) played great down the stretch for the BABC. He’s a good ball handler and was able to keep the game under control and execute BABC’s offense in the half court. With John Joseph and Aahmane Santos not available this weekend, Celia provided the stability in the back court that they needed.
Christian Wilkins, 6’4” JR. PF (Suffield Academy, CT) – His future is in football (BCS level prospect), but he played a huge role in frustrating Jarred Reuter and Marcel Pettway from the NE Playaz in the second half. At 6’4”, Christian plays like a football player and it was his physicality that made a huge difference down the stretch for the BABC to win in overtime.
Steven Collins, 5’11”JR. PG (Lynn English) – It was a tough weekend for Metro Boston, but one of the bright spots for Metro was the play of Steven Collins. I’ve watched Steven play six times over the past two months, and in my opinion this was the best weekend I’ve seen him shoot the ball from the perimeter. Steven’s stock continues to rise and I am expecting a big June/July for him.
C.J. Davidson 5’10”JR. PG (Fairfield Prep, CT) – Already physically strong, very quick, and can get to the basket and finish. Also a very good ball handler and quick hands that can disrupted opposing PG’s on the defensive side of the ball.
Thomas Nolan, 6’3” JR. SG (Fairfield Prep, CT) – Shot the ball very well this weekend. He hit the game winner against Metro Boston, and was also one of the leading scorers in the 3rd place game against Albany City Rocks. Thomas is a knock-down shooter and when opposing teams switch to zone – WATCH OUT! He is one of the better shooters I’ve seen in New England over the past two months.
Joel Wincowski, 6’1” JR. PG (Lake George, VT) – The Sharpshooter's were under-manned the entire weekend, as they only had 6 players with them. However, you can see by watching Joel that he’s one of the top rising juniors in New England. He can play both the PG and off guard position. A very good shooter and does a good job getting his teammates involved.
