Arguably the top AAU program in the country this summer, BABC was at it again this weekend as their sophomore team won the 2011 AAU Sophomore National Championship. BABC defeated Team Takeover of Washington, DC 30-29 in Lake Buena Vista, FL to end an amazing summer for the program.

The National Championship is the 16th for Leo Papile’s storied AAU program. It also makes it back-to-back for most of this group of sophomores, who won the freshman National Championship in 2010. The win also culminates another undefeated summer season (30-0) for the BABC.

Battling fatigue and an amazing stretch run of five games in a 24 hour period BABC locked down defensively and pulled out the tight win that was streamed live on ESPN3 on Saturday evening.

Everett native and Tilton School center Nerlens Noel ’13 (pictured above left) held down the paint defensively and throughout the tournament into the finals. Noel blocked four shots, pulled down 10 boards and had six points.

Guard Rene Castro ’13 (pictured below) was steady throughout the tournament and lead BABC with nine points in the championship game.

Forward Andrew Chrabascz ’13, point guard Jaylen Brantley ‘13 and Castro were the catalysts in the later rounds of the tournament as Chrabascz lead the team in scoring in multiple games, Brantley provided steady leadership and Castro continued to get to the hoop and play solid defense.

Star freshman Wayne Selden ’14 of the Tilton School continued to impress those in attendance as he has cemented himself as one of the top 5 players in the Class of 2014.

The bench also provided much needed minutes and depth throughout the grueling tournament. Bonzie Colson ’14, Jherson Colon ‘13,  Tyrese Hoxter ‘13, Goodluck Okonoboh ’13, and Jonathan Joseph ‘14 filled out the roster and all stepped up at given times in the tournament.

Selden, Colson and Joseph all were key members of the 2011 Freshman National Championship in July.
