O'Brien Expecting Big Things for North Reading this Spring
MEDFORD, Mass. -- The North Reading Hornets are 3-0 on the early season and are coming off a 2012 season where they made program history by reaching Harvard Stadium and the Division 3 state finals.
Senior middie Mike O'Brien '13 is back for his final season at North Reading and looking forward to big things in 2013.
O'Brien, a senior midfielder for the North Reading Hornets boys lacrosse team, is hoping for not only a successful senior season, but also hoping to help his team get back to Harvard and beyond this season.
In his junior year, the Hornets finished with a 19-1 record in the regular season (22-2 overall) and won the Cape Ann League title. The Hornets defeated Austin Prep, Archbishop Williams and Weston on their way to the D-3 finals before losing in the title game to Dover-Sherborn. O'Brien netted two of his team's four goals in the finals loss.
O'Brien has contributed both offensively and defensively in the early stages of the 2013 season as the two-way midfielder has helped transition the losses of some program staples to new and emerging stars like freshman attack Nick Day '16. O'Brien has five goals and two assists through three games this season.
"I think we have a great chance of making it to the state finals at Harvard Stadium in June," O'Brien said after last Thursday's 16-2 win over Medford. "We have a strong team and the Cape Ann League is a competitive conference."
Because O'Brien will be graduating in just two months, he has to make a big decision regarding what college he will attend in the fall very soon. His first choice school is UMass Amherst. He will likely start his freshman year as an undeclared major but is hoping to get accepted into the prestigious business program at UMass. O'Brien is looking to continue playing lacrosse in college and is strongly considering playing on a club or intramural team at the collegiate level.
"I definitely want to continue playing at some level after high school." O'Brien said. "That will definitely keep me involved with a sport I have been committed to the past few years."
O'Brien and the Hornets get back to action today as they travel to take on Danvers at 4 p.m.
