John MacLean '16 - Medfield

Medfield junior midfielder John MacLean '16 is our 2015 Mass Prep Stars Player of the Year.

The Tri Valley League Most Valuable player helped lead Medfield to their second consecutive MIAA Division 2 State Championship with a 16-12 win over Longmeadow at Harvard University last week. You can check out highlights from MacLean and Medfield's title game action on Boston Lax.

"It was an amazing year with some amazing milestones," MacLean told Mass Prep Stars. "We finally got the opportunity to take down Duxbury for the first time, we extended our home winning streak to 35 games, and we won back to back state championships. It does not get much better than that."

MacLean deferred credit to his teammates and coaches for the sustained success of the Medfield lacrosse prowess.

"It his was a 100% team effort, beginning with the coaches and all the time they put into our practices, scouting reports and games," MacLean said. " This also extends to the kids on the bench that pump everyone up when we need a boost of energy. This was really a season to remember."

MacLean finished his junior season with 100 total points (73 Goals, 27 Assists). The junior just completed an All-American season, his second consecutive All-American campaign for the Warriors. The 2014 TVL Offensive player of the year was also our Mass Prep Stars Top 2016 player last season and a second team Mass Prep Stars Super Team member in 2014.

Known statewide for his explosive and accurate outside shot, MacLean has put in the work to take his game to another level this season.

"Ever since I was little I always wanted to have the best shot," MacLean said. "Once high school came around I realized that I needed to work on the rest of my game a lot more. I started to work on my dodging, then I moved on to integrating my shot and my dodge into my shot on the run."

The commitment to his game has certainly paid off for the Boston University commitment. MacLean is a member of a talented and decorated Medfield lacrosse class of 2016, that is widely recognized as one of the top classes in Massachusetts.

"Our class of 2016 is a really special group." MacLean said. "I think we work so well together because we are so tight and are really good friends. We have kids like Matt Treiber and Nigel Reiff who have chemistry like no other attackmen that I have seen. On defense we have Sam Naumann and Kyle Gately. They have the toughness and keep us in big games when we need them. We also have Jack Vara, who is the best in the business for faceoffs. At midfield we have Kevin McCordic, Matt Johnson, Tim Warren and myself. We are so tight as a class and I believe that our success came from early on in youth lacrosse with Coach Brown and Coach Treiber. They worked with us from kindergarten to eighth grade and really made us the lacrosse players, and the men that we are today."

MacLean is our fifth Mass Prep Stars Player of the Year in our six years of local in depth coverage of Massachusetts' top high school athletes. See our past winners below,
