2013 MAPS Public School Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year: Ben Cox ‘13 Medfield
Medfield's Ben Cox '13 has been named our 2013 Massachusetts Prep Stars Public School Boys Lacrosse Player of the year.
The senior defenseman had a standout season for the 20-4 Eastern Mass. D2 Champions, helping Medfield defeat Hingham, 11-10 in OT, in the EMass championships at Harvard, before bowing to Longmeadow in the D2 State Championship.
"The most memorable moment in my four years at Medfield was winning the EMass final this year against Hingham, at Harvard," Cox told Mass Prep Stars.
In one of the most exciting and evenly played lacrosse games of the 2013 season, Cox shined bright. The senior-captain played great individual and team defense and also had a beautiful coast-to-coast assist to help give Medfield some much needed momentum midway through the game.
Cox was named an Eastern Mass. All-American this season and graduated Medfield as a member of two Division 2 State Championship lacrosse teams (2010, 2011). He was also a part of three D2 Eastern Mass. Championship wins at Harvard Stadium (2010, 2011, 2013).
"Although I was not happy with the end result of the season, we have a lot to be proud of," Cox explained. "We were co-Tri Valley League champions and also EMass champs. I think the key to our success this season was our team chemistry. We enjoyed going to practice and getting better everyday."
The University of Vermont-bound Cox was also named to the first annual Boston Lax All-American game. The game featured the top players from Eastern, Central and Western Mass., along with the top players from the ISL. The game, played last Monday night at Harvard Stadium, is donating all proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project and the One Fund.
"Playing in the first Bostonlax AA game was surreal," Cox said. "The talent out there at Harvard was second to none. It was special in the sense that it was more than just a lacrosse game. It was an honor to represent One Fund and the Wounded Warrior Project. It truly was a great experience."
Cox will join 2012 Mass Prep Stars (formerly New England Prep Stars) Private School player of the year Sam Tweed (Middlesex School) at UVM, where both will try to lead the Catamount defense in 2014.
In the winter Cox was also a star on the ice as he captained the Warriors hockey team and finished second on the team in scoring, adding 12 goals and posting 38 points in 21 games this winter.
