Catholic Memorial football star Peter Ngobidi '13 made it official on Wednesday as he signed his National Letter of Intent to play football for head coach Charley Molnar and the University of Massachusetts Minutemen.
"'I am really excited for UMass and what they have to offer me both with football and with academics," Ngobidi told Mass Prep Stars.
The 6-foot-3 220 pound Defensive End has progressed as a football player each year and had a dominating and productive senior season for CM. Ngobidi registered 12 sacks , 21 tackles for loss, 68 total tackles, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one that he ran back for a 70 yard touchdown. Ngobidi also blocked a PAT.
His progression on the field is a direct result of the hard work that he put in to transition from a a young, raw football talent to a Division 1 FBS football player.
"We worked out five days a week regardless of whether we were in school or on vacation," Ngobidi said of his offseason work with teammates."I would just have to make sure that I put some type of work in each day. There was no room for a day off until I reached where I wanted to be."
Ngobidi credited his head coach Alex Campea and his teammates for helping him develop his talent during his years at Catholic Memorial.
"Playing at CM under Coach Alex Campea has been great," Ngobidi said. "He is a great man and he worked us hard so that we could all get to where we needed and wanted to be. I have found brothers in many of the teammates that I have had over the past four years."
Ngobidi's progression can also be measured from the statistical production that he had on the field. He had a breakout junior season, which caught the attention of many college coaches, as he totaled nine sacks, 20 tackles for loss, 60 total tackles, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Each year I just got bigger, faster, stronger, and better."
Ngobidi verbally committed to UMass back in mid-July of 2012.
"As the New Year hit and January began I became so excited that i started a count down going for February 6th and Signing Day," Ngobidi said. "On signing day I thought back to it all and became filled with joy. It was an assurance that I finally made it to the next level and I could say that everything that I have done has finally paid off."
MAPS (Mass Prep Stars) No. 9 ranked senior in the Class of 2013 Ngobidi joins a UMass class that has many Minutemen fans excited for the future.
"The (UMass) players and coaching staff are great and so are the kids coming in from my recruiting class," Ngobidi said. "These next couple of years should be great and I cannot wait for them."
