Newson and Woumn Lead Lynn English Over Peabody

LYNN, Mass. -- Diondra Woumn scored 19 points and Deidra Newson added 18 points to help the Lynn English Bulldogs girls basketball team defeat the previously undefeated Peabody Tanners, 61-36 at Lynn English High School on Friday night.
The Bulldogs dominated the Tanners from start to finish and held Peabody to only 10 points in the first half. They scored the first 10 points of the game and led 10-2 after the opening quarter.
The Bulldogs continued to extend the lead in the second quarter. They scored the first eight points of the second quarter to extend the lead to 25-10 at halftime. The leading scorers in the first half were Newson, who scored nine and Catherine Stinson scored eight of her 10 points in the first half.
Lynn English continued their offensive onslaught in the the second half as they scored 15 straight points, including seven from Woumn and six from Newson, in the third quarter to put the game out of reach for the Tanners.
Peabody came out in the second half and found their scoring touch that resulted in an 8-0 run of their own at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Lynn English also did it from beyond the arc as they hit six 3-pointers in the game while Peabody did not have any. Newson, Woumn and Stnson all hit two 3-pointers each.
Peabody was 4-0 before tonight's game and we knew they were going to be tough to beat," Newson said after the game. "Our goal is to win the Northeast Conference large school title for the second year in a row."
Lynn English also received a strong effort from Mikayla Everette who had 10 points in the win.
Lynn English gets back to action Monday night when they travel to Lynn Classical at 7 p.m. in a cross-city match-up.
