WESTON – The Westford girls basketball team started hot like lightning and finished cool like autumn rain. The Grey Ghosts scored the first nine points of the game and cruised past Weston 60-48 last night in a DCL matchup.
The Grey Ghosts were able to impose their will and physical dominance early and never gave up. Westford led 20-6 just over nine minutes into the game and try as Weston might the Wildcats were unable to make much of a dent in the lead.
The Grey Ghosts were led by the junior tandem of forwards Samantha Hyslip and Hannah Hackley. Hyslip had a monster game with 24 points and eight rebounds while Hackley pumped in 19 points and grabbed a handful of boards.
The Wildcats were led by senior Saliah Serrette. Serrette (pictured below) started the game cold but caught fire as the game progressed and finished with 19 points. She also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Weston’s other senior captain Alissa Duffey, also had a strong game. Duffey netted 13 points including Weston’s only three pointer.
The Wildcats hurt themselves at the foul line shooting 61 percent from the stripe (8-13). By contrast Westford went 9-10 from the free throw line.
The Wildcats came alive late in the second half but it was too little too late. Weston was able to cut the lead down to 11 points with just over three minutes to play, but Westford senior Christina Nowak buried a three from the wing to put the Grey Ghosts up by 14 and squelch the Weston rally.
Both Nowak and Weston sophomore Natalie Shea finished with seven points.
