LOWELL, Mass. -- In a battle of two top-12 teams it came down to physicality and execution.
Give two checkmarks to the host Red Raiders who bounced back from an atrocious start to defeat Andover 50-40 in front of a full house at Lowell High School.
The Golden Warriors sprinted out of the gates and jumped out to a 7-2 lead midway through the first quarter, but it was all Lowell from there. Led by sophomore Kareem Davis, who scored all six of his points during the run, and seven points from senior Jonathan Perez, the Red Raiders outscored Andover 18-8 to end the half up five. Perez finished tied with a team-high 12 points.
“[Kareem] battled, and that’s what I like,” Lowell coach Scott Boyle said. “It isn’t all about scoring for him. He’s a great playmaker, can play defense, and hustle. I was happy for him.”

Lowell extended the lead early in the second half and never let Andover get back ahead. The Warriors made a run late in the third to close the game to 35-32 before the Red Raiders put the throttle down in the fourth.
Senior Drew Healy (pictured above) grabbed big rebound after big rebound for Lowell and scored eight of his 12 points in the final 16 minutes. The 6-foot-8 Healy also pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked four shots in the win.
“He’s a work in progress,” Boyle said of Healy. “He missed two years of basketball; he’s learning on the run. He’s learning on the run, and he battles. He did some good things, he did some things we’d like to correct. He’s a hard worker [and] a good kid. It’s exciting to have him.”
- Andover senior Sam Dowden had another solid all-around game with 10 points.
- Fellow Golden Warrior senior, Chris Dunn connected from beyond the arc four times en route to a game-high 14 points.
- Lowell had six players score at least four points in the game.
- A three-pointer by senior Kevin Brito late in the fourth proved to be the dagger as it put the Red Raiders up 10. Brito finished teh game with 10 points.
