The Beverly Panthers girls basketball team won its third straight game by defeating the Swampscott Big Blue, 59-51, on Wednesday night.
Beverly played a strong first half and jumped out to an early 30-21 lead at the half and never looked back.
They were led by Mary Cate Flaherty, who scored six of her eight points in the opening quarter to set the tone for Beverly on the evening.
We are no strangers to the Flaherty name after watching brother Brendan put together an All-State and Super Bowl winning football season.
The Panthers also recieved strong games from Bridget Keaton (12 points), Andrea Zelano (11 points) and Melissa Lubas (12 points).
Beverly lost its first six games of the season but have improved since the new year started. For the majority of the game, Beverly's defense was able to handle Swampscott's talented offense.
Swampscott had two players, star senior Ara Talkov, who led all scorers with 18 points, and Jackie Walsh, who scored 11, score in double digits on the night.
The Panthers were able to secure their third straight win by playing a strong second half. Lubas, a terrific three point shooter, and Zelano scored some key points in the second half.
"The new year has made us a better team," Mary Cate Flaherty said after the game. "Our team goal is to make the tournament and beat some of the strong teams, like Lynn English."
Beverly improves to 3-6, while Swampscott drops to 5-3 on teh young season.
