SALEM, Mass. -- Christian Dunston scored 19 points and Marvin Baez added 16 to help the Salem Witches boys basketball team defeat their arch rival Beverly Panthers, 67-56, at Salem High School on Monday night.
After losing a close game in overtime to Lynn Classical on Friday, Salem was determined to give themselves a fresh start in this game. They did not get off to a fast start as both teams went back and forth out of the gate with Beverly scoring the first five points of the game. Junior forward Jon Berchoff scored nine points in the opening quarter to help give Beverly a 19-18 lead after the first quarter.
Salem would capture the lead for good in the second quarter as senior forward Davonte Holloway helped the Witches by coming off the bench to score 11 points in the second quarter. Dunston also played well in the second quarter to help the Witches take a 38-27 lead at the half.
Dunston and Baez proved too much down the stretch with Baez scoring nine points in the fourth quarter to help the Witches earn the win.
"We were disappointed after losing to Lynn Classical on Friday," Dunston, a senior guard said after the game. "We had to focus on getting ahead and maintaining a lead. We have tough competition this year, so we have to continue to play hard and play as a team."
