Early Season Six Pack of action in the MIAA

As we prepare to turn the page on 2012 and welcome in 2013 the MIAA basketball season has started with a bang.

We take a look at some key performances with the focus on Massachusetts' top talent.

Top Dogs: The most impressive team to date early in the season has been the Lowell Raiders. Lowell is led by sophomore guard Kareem Davis, who has looked like an All-State point guard in the early stages of the season. Davis helped lead Lowell to a 93-39 win over New Bedford. We are looking forward to Lowell's match-up with consensus State No. 1 Central Catholic later this season. Both Merrimack Valley Conference teams are looking strong out of the gate and are currently ranked one and two in ESPN Boston's MIAA Top 25 team poll. Read more about Lowell's big win over New Bedford on ESPN Boston here.

Warrior Effort: The Andover Golden Warriors may not have been pre-season favorites in the MVC this year but make no mistake about it, they will be there competing in the end. Coach Dave Fazio has Andover playing with extreme effort on the defensive end and they are getting key play from all players, highlighted by senior forward Sam Dowden, (pictured). Dowden scored 26 points and pulled down eight rebounds in a first round win over North Andover in teh greater Lawrence Holiday tournament and played well in a narrow loss to rival Central Catholic in the next round. Read more about Dowden and Andover's early season efforts in the Lawrence Eagle Tribune here.

Lights Out: Newton North sophomore guard Tommy Mobley was on fire in an early season win over Milton. The sharp shooter nailed nine 3-pointers and scored 30 points in a 76-51 victory. Read more on the game here from the Newton Tab.

Shot of the Year: Unless you have been sleeping under a rock to start the MIAA hoops season you have all seen the game-winning heave by guard Pat Santos of East Boston to defeat Madison Park at the buzzer. Boston Herald reporter Tom Layman was on the scene with his camera ready as he captured the viral video and shot that made ESPN's play of the day. In case you have not seen it you can check it out here courtesy of the Boston Herald.

On the Scene: New Mission sophomore guard Juwan Gooding has Massachusetts' High School sports writers buzzing as he has started strong out of the gate for New Mission this season. Gooding is an athletic guard who burst onto the scene this summer with Expressions Elite in the AAU circuit. Read more about Gooding in an early season win over Charlestown on ESPN Boston here.
